London 2012: The Countdown Series: Table Tennis Preview

18 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. This is a preview of the table tennis at the London games.

Everybody that is following the London games this year will know that the ExCeL Centre (pictured) is the home of all things combat sports in the London Olympics. In addition to combat sports, table tennis matches will be held there, because it is the venue for table tennis.

172 singles players and 32 teams are ready for action.

There has never been a repeat winner in the men's singles, however, Ma Lin hopes to end that streak. He is the defending winner from Beijing 2008. On the women's side, Zhang Yining hopes to break the mold of the singles win record in which she shares with Deng Yaping. Both have two singles wins.

China is the defending Olympic champion from Beijing 2008 in the men's and women's team event, in which at Beijing, it was the inaugural event.

Up next: a look at badminton.
