About less than 96 hours left until the first day of the London Olympics! This is a flashback to the London 1948 games.
London played host to the Games of the XIV Olympiad in 1948, the second time the city and the UK hosted the summer games. 38 countries had their athletes win medals at these games, including in various team events. The United States held off Brazil in the men's basketball final, while Sweden defeated Yugoslavia in the football final. India defeated Great Britain in the hockey final, and Italy defeated Hungary to win the water polo final.
Fanny Blankers Koen won the most gold medals at these London games; winning four in the women's 100m and 200m (athletics) as well as the 80m hurdles and in the 4x100m relay (also athletics).
These were the final Olympics for art competitions, it was erased from the summer games menu beginning at Helsinki 1952.
