Friday Jukebox 3.30.12: A Short Tribute to Earl Scruggs.

On Wednesday, banjo virtuoso Earl Scruggs died at the age of 88 after battling illnesses. Scruggs is a legend on the banjo and when you see him strumming the banjo, it is brilliance. This is one of his hits, with Lester Flatt, called "Foggy Mountain Breakdown."

NCAA Division I Basketball & Men's Ice Hockey Championships. A Preview.

This weekend will begin a week full of NCAA championship action at the Division I level, with the men's Final Four in New Orleans for the first time since 2003. The women's Final Four is in Denver, and the men's ice hockey Frozen Four is in Tampa as well.

The last time the men's Final Four was held in the Superdome was when Syracuse defeated Kansas in the championship game, back in 2003. This year, there will be no rematch of the 2003 championship game. Why? I'll explain. Syracuse lost to Ohio State in the East region final on Saturday, while KU will be there this year through knocking off North Carolina in the Midwest region final this past weekend.

So many great moments happened when the Final Four took place in the Superdome, from Michael Jordan to Chris Webber's "I'll call time out...oh wait...we have no time outs! We're fucked!" What amazing will happen on Saturday and Monday?

NCAA Division I Men's basketball national semifinals
SATURDAY 3.31
(1S) Kentucky v (4W) Louisville
(2E) Ohio State v (2MW) Kansas

The women's Final Four, at Denver's Pepsi Center, home of the Avs and Nuggets, seemed to have all the number ones playing this weekend. Not surprising. I am hoping for a Baylor-Notre Dame final on Tuesday!

NCAA Division I Women's basketball national semifinals
SUNDAY 4.1
(1DM) Baylor v (1F) Stanford
(1R) Notre Dame v (1K) Connecticut

Finally, the men's Frozen Four, at Tampa's Times Forum (home of the Lightning), will boast two new faces to the Frozen Four as Union (NJ) and Ferris State (MN) are making their first appearance in the Frozen Four. Always nice to see a small program get this far, and both will play on Thursday in a semifinal. RIT in 2010 is a perfect example.

NCAA Division I men's ice hockey national semifinals
THURSDAY 4.5
Union v Ferris State
Boston College v Minnesota

Men's Final Four is on CBS. Women's Final Four and the men's Frozen Four are exclusive to the ESPN networks. Gonna be a roller coaster week for sure.

AFL 2012 Premiership Season: They Might Be Giants...

A new era of AFL football begins Saturday night with the newest club to join the AFL, Greater Western Sydney, in their first ever real home and away game of their club. The Giants' first opponent is their (soon-to-be) crosstown rivals Sydney. The Swans, along with the Eagles were the lone interstate clubs to make the finals last season.

Tom Scott's Geelong Cats squad is ready to defend their premiership, as they open their season at Subiaco against Fremantle.

Last year's expansion club, Gold Coast, who slipped to wooden spoon status last year (and Port was in that position), will host the Crows.

7 and Foxtel will get exclusive rights to the AFL in 2012. Foxtel will carry all AFL games LIVE (same with their NRL package). The AFL will begin its new three year deal beginning with Fox Soccer Plus this season.

Some NFL Off-Season Shit...

A month before the NFL draft, some players are making some bold moves.

The Texans lost two key defensive players in Mario Williams and Demeco Ryans. Williams, a left defensive end, is headed to Buffalo. Ryans, a linebacker, is headed to Philly.

It is also official that Peyton Manning will return to action in 2012, but in Denver, thus leaving Tim Tebow no choice but leaving. Now Tebow is headed to the Big Apple.

And now the Saints are paying the price for Bountygate.

The obvious are obvious. Welcome to silly season, NFL style.

NCAA D-I Championships Weekend in Review

Tuesday's second round games in the NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament brought an end of a weekend full of thrills and the unexpected in the NCAA Championships.

As usual, the men's tournament served up plenty of upsets, including in the first round with Patriot League tournament winners Lehigh sending Duke home early on Friday night, and MEAC tournament winners Norfolk State sending Mizzou home. Both Mizzou and Duke were number 2 seeds in their respective regions!

Some pleasant surprises heading into Thursday's regional semifinals is the MAC tourney winners Ohio University, the thirteenth seed in the Midwest region as well as the resurgency of North Carolina State men's basketball, which has been sort of in absentia since the days when the late Jim Valvano was coach (remember Valvano took NCSU to a national title in 1983). Good onya Wolfpack.

On the women's side, it's pretty much the usual, nothing special. But for your own sake, check out Baylor center Brittney Griner's historic dunk in the Lady Bears' second round win over UF. Only the 2nd to dunk in the women's tourney.

Also on the NCAA championship front, Penn State-under Cael Sanderson-won the team title once again at the D-I wrestling championships in St. Louis on Saturday. Cornell junior Kyle Dake with his third straight national title, and perhaps a fourth next year (two have done it in their collegiate careers-including Sanderson).

Dake and Griner with such historic feats this weekend. Also congrats to Minnesota women's ice hockey, as they defeated Wisconsin for their third NCAA D-I title in program history! Men's Frozen Four in Tampa next month!

The other two were bronze medals. Wrestler Khalil Taha won bronze at Helsinki 1952 in the Greco-Roman welterweight class. Another wrestler, Hassan Ali Bechara, won bronze at Moscow 1980 in the Greco-Roman super heavyweight class.

The Road to Denver Begins Saturday!

This is the Pepsi Center in Denver. Home of the NHL's Avalanche and NBA's Nuggets. On April Fool's weekend, it will be invaded by the four surviving programs of Division I NCAA women's basketball, as the Pepsi Center is this year's Women's Final Four site.

Baylor, Connecticut, Notre Dame and Stanford are number one seeds in their respective regions.

Here are some notable first round matchups you should chew on:
  • Fresno State/Georgetown
  • Marist/Georgia
  • LSU/San Diego State
  • UWGB/Iowa State
  • Kentucky/McNeese State
  • South Dakota State/Purdue
Those I think are some of the matchups of the first round to keep an eye on, especially the return of LSU to the tournament. Hopefully UWGB, Marist and South Dakota State make it through this time. New blood makes everything better!

So who will win the women's D-I tournament? Who knows!

London 2012: The Countdown Series: Japan

132 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. Up next on the parade of nations: Japan (JPN).

Japan has participated in the summer Olympics since 1912. 362 medals combined have been won by Japanese athletes in these summer games, with 123 of the 362 being gold medals.

Every sport has at least one dominating athlete. And there's Sawao Kato (pictured). To this date, he holds the Olympic record for most gold medals by a male gymnast with eight. He won those gold medals in four events-the individual all around (Mexico City 1968, Munich 1972), the team all around (Mexico City 1968, Munich 1972 and Montreal 1976), the floor exercise (Mexico City 1968), and the parallel bars (Mexico City 1968 and Montreal 1976).

Another gymnast, Akinori Nakayama (pictured), won six medals of his own in the summer games. He won in team all around (Mexico City 1968 and Munich 1972), parallel bars (Mexico City 1968), horizontal bar (Mexico City 1968) and men's rings (Mexico City 1968 and Munich 1972).

Three other gymnasts have won five gold medals each for Japan-Takashi Ono, Yukio Endo and Mitsuo Tsukahara, all in an area between Rome 1960 and Montreal 1976, a dominating era for Japanese gymnastics.

The most recent summer games success from Japan is that of Kosuke Kitajima (pictured). He has had some great swims recently, especially at the FINA World Championships, but Kitajima did win four Olympic gold medals of his own. He won the 100m breaststroke at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 and in the 200m breaststroke at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008. Kitajima could be the favorite, if qualified, for those races at London.

Another gymnast, Eizo Kenmotsu, won three gold medals, as well as judoken Tadahiro Nomura.

Eighteen Japanese athletes have won two gold medals in the summer games.

At the team level, men's volleyball took home gold at Munich 1972, while the women's volleyball team won gold at Tokyo 1964 and again at Montreal 1976. The softball team won gold at Beijing 2008; unfortunately it was the last year for softball in the summer Olympics (sadly).

As of now, 164 Japanese athletes are headed to London and will compete in 17 events, including athletics, boxing, cycling, modern pentathlon, swimming, taekwondo, triathlon, weightlifting and wrestling. Women's football is headed there, taking their momentum from their emotional Women's World Cup final win back in July over the United States. This will be the first Olympics for Japan since the devastating earthquake that rocked and damaged areas of the country over a year ago.

Japan was the host country of the 1964 summer Olympics (Tokyo).

The Road to the Superdome Starts Tonight!

With the Final Four returning to the Superdome this year for the first time since 2003, sadly, not one school from Louisiana is in the men's tourney this year. However, with the extension of the field to 68, there is sure to be the same out shit like every year.

Man, how the NCAA D-I men's tournament has evolved. First, it was about 25 schools, then went to 64 in 1982 (the year CBS took over NBC as far as TV rights), then 65 over a decade ago, and now 68.

Some interesting matchups to look forward to in this first week. The four play-ins, in which begin tonight will kick off with SWAC tournament champs Mississippi Valley State against the Sun Belt's Western Kentucky. Southland tourney champs Lamar will play in one of the play-ins against America East tourney champs Vermont.

Syracuse, Kentucky, Michigan State and North Carolina are the number one seeds. Again, it begins tonight, kicking off the hectic NCAA spring championships, in which it ends in April with both the men's and women's Final Fours and the Division I men's Frozen Four (in Tampa, nonetheless).

London 2012: The Countdown Series: Jamaica

133 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. Up next on the parade of nations: Jamaica (JAM).

Since 1948, Jamaica has participated in the summer Olympics. 55 medals have been won, 13 being gold medals.

Everybody (and I mean everybody) knows that the fastest man on earth is none other than Usain Bolt! Bolt (pictured) won three golds at Beijing-and set world records as well-in the men's 100m and 200m as well as the anchor of the men's 4x100m relay that won gold along with Michael Frater, Dwight Thomas and Asafa Powell.

In addition to Bolt, Veronica Campbell Brown (pictured) won three gold medals in the summer games. At Athens 2004, she won gold in the women's 200m as well as a part of the 4x100m relay team that won gold at those Athens games. At Beijing 2008, she once again won gold in the 200m.

Two Jamaicans have won two gold medals each-Arthur Wint and George Rhoden. Wint won the men's 400m at London 1948 and was part of the men's 4x400m relay that won gold at Helsinki 1952. Rhoden won both of his gold medals at Helsinki 1952-in the 400m and in the 4x400m relay.

As of now, 38 Jamaicans will head to London to participate in four events. In addition to their ever strong athletics program (track to be exact), swimming and taekwondo will also be represented among the events that will have at least one Jamaican in it.
