Friday Jukebox 9.30.11

If Mr. Peppermint was part of your childhood, this is for y'all.

Mr. Peppermint himself, Jerry Haynes, passed away this week. His son will be remembered as the frontman for the band, the Butthole Surfers. Speaking of which, "Pepper" was off of their '96 album, Electriclarryland.

And as a bonus, here's Mr. Peppermint himself...

His show, Peppermint Place, ran on TV for two decades, from 1975-1996. It was produced at WFAA-TV Dallas/Fort Worth and aired on Saturday mornings on WFAA before the usual ABC Saturday Morning faire. The show was also in syndication in some markets. Jerry will be missed.

Playoffs!

Best time of year to be a baseball fan. The postseason begins Friday!

Defending AL champs Texas Rangers once again got the west by the horns. The Rangers host the emerging Rays in a ALDS rematch from last year. The Rays snuck past the Red Sox in the wild card race within the last few weeks and has once again earned a trip to the postseason.

The other ALDS series will feature the Tigers and Yankees.

On the National side, the Diamondbacks are back and so are the Brewers. The first time that the Brewers have won the NL central since...I think it's the realignment of '98 once the D-Backs and Rays entered the competition. Their series begin on Saturday. The Cards and Phillies are in the other NLDS series.

Every divisional series game will be on tbs, with some on TNT. Consult local listings and GO RANGERS!

AFL Grand Final 2011! (And Other Football News!)

This year's AFL Grand Final marks the first time since 1953 that Geelong and Collingwood will play for the premiership cup. Cats coach Chris Scott is making his first appearance in the Grand Final as a head coach, in just his first year after taking over the reigns from Mark "Bomber" Thompson who resigned over the season. The Cats came off a huge win over the Eagles in a preliminary final last Saturday.

For Mick Malthouse, it's the opposite. He's been to this point numerous times as coach at both West Coast and Collingwood. The defending premiership coach is returning with the same strong side like last year and could expect even better than in last year's Grand Final match(es) with St. Kilda.

The biggest news story to come out of this weekend's game is the injury to Steve Johnson. Johnson, one of the Cats' most important players, injured a knee in the 3rd quarter of Saturday's preliminary final against West Coast. His status is uncertain for the match on Saturday.

The match can be seen LIVE in the US on ESPN2, and with LIVE timing and scoring at AFL.com.au complete with LIVE radio feeds from 3AW, 4MMM (Triple M Melbourne), ABC, SEN, K-Rock and NIRS.

Speaking on the football front, Rugby World Cup is continuing, in the States watch it on Universal Sports, with two games upcoming on NBC, including New Zealand/Canada on Sunday. Also on the rugby front, the Australasian National Rugby League has their Grand Final on Sunday with Manly taking on New Zealand.

Lots of football this weekend folks!

Centenary to SCAC in 2012-13!

So are they really leaving the ASC for the SCAC? Read it and weep.

The Glory of Living at MLP Opens This Weekend!

This weekend marks the first play of the 2011-12 season at Marjorie Lyons Playhouse on the Centenary College of Louisiana campus.

Rebecca Gilman's The Glory of Living begins Friday night (9.30) and runs through Saturday, October 8.

If your headed out to any of the performances, this is simply black box theatre, similar to Prelude to a Kiss earlier this year. In other words a stage within a stage.

The play is one of two directed by the assistant professor of theatre at Centenary, Mrs. Emily Heugatter, and stars Andrew Wood, Chelsea David, as well as Merwin McCready, Daniel Proveaux, Marion Paton, Nathan Gauthier, Amanda Spangler, Tara Watson, Sandy Rather, Emily Slazer and Lauren Morrison.

BELLATOR 51 Knockouts!

For those who missed out on Bellator 51 (in other words, for those who jacked off to the crappiness that is UFC 135), check out these two knockouts from Bellator 51 middleweight quarterfinals...

Dantas' flying knee on Reis...

Vila knocking the fuck out of Warren. End of story.

If you missed out on this...SCREW YOU. You should've saved your money.

Centenary Ladies Softball 2012 Schedule is out!

The 2012 Ladies softball schedule is out. I myself didn't attend any of their games last year, but this schedule is a lot different. All but a few games are ASC games, with the exception of a couple against Millsaps and LSU Alexandria.

2011 softball schedule.

The season begins with a road contest with UTD (again in conference play), and on February 18 will open up at home against Millsaps.

From March 31 to April 17 is a huge home stand with 12 straight games including 5 doubleheaders. The home finale is on April 17 against LSUA.

On April 21, the Ladies conclude with a doubleheader with Mississippi College on the road.

The Man who Invented this...

Died on Monday. He was 97.

Could he be buried in Doritos? Maybe the spicy nacho or the pizza or taco flavored ones? So many flavors of one of my favorite snack foods!

Friday Jukebox 9.23.11

Since one of our past FJ's was on Claudja Barry, let's do this again. This time, a great song from Barry from 1984, "Trippin' on the Moon." Like some, even most of Barry's productions, this was also produced by Jurgen Korduletsch, who from what I've researched, married Barry. Coincidence?

Once a Star. Will Retire a Star.

After this past year at the Wings, Mike Modano decided that the return to the (North) Stars organization was pretty much more about club loyalty.

After 23 seasons, Modano made it official, he announced his retirement on Wednesday, as well as receiving a one day contract with the Stars.

He will go down as the all time leading scorer in the NHL amongst US-born players. A little throwback for all of you: actual from the '88 NHL Draft, where he was the #1 draft pick (overall) by the (North) Stars. And the rest is history. To the new Stars owner: please for the sake of the franchise, bring the old North Stars jerseys back for a few games this season.

BELLATOR 51 Preview!

BELLATOR 51 will mark the first time the promotion will visit the state of Ohio. And another classification tournament will begin. This time it's the bantamweight tournament.

Former season 2 featherweight champion Joe Warren is among the headliners in the quarterfinals as he takes on Alexis Vila. Warren may be contemplating Olympic gold at London in 2012.

Also Wilson Reis will make his debut as a bantamweight, a step down from featherweight. At Bellator 41, Reis was knocked out early by Patricio "Pitbull" Freire in a featherweight semifinal back in April.

CARD:
Bantamweight Quarterfinals
(135 lb./60.75kg)
Wilson Reis v Eduardo Dantas
Luis Nogueira v Ed West
Joe Warren v Alexis Vila
Marcos Galvao v Chase Beebe

LIVE on MTV2 and EPIX2 HD Saturday night!

Official Hit in Head with Paper Roll...

A football match this weekend saw this official getting hit with a roll of paper at the start of the second half.

Is this a toilet paper commercial? Maybe Charmin is trying to use this footage to demonstrate how a "squeezably soft" roll of toilet paper can cause a man to go down. Judge for yourself.

AFL Finals Series 2011: Preliminary Finals preview.

Big Cox is waiting to get back to the highest stage, and so are the Eagles. First Preliminary Final appearance since 2006, after their thriller win over Carlton in a semifinal on Saturday at Subiaco Oval. Now, last year's wooden spooners take on Geelong in Saturday's preliminary final.

Defending premiers Collingwood takes on Hawthorn in the other preliminary final on Friday. The Hawks are back in the final four after their semifinal win over Sydney Friday night.

Both matches are at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

AFL.com.au with live timing, scoring and radio! Next weekend, mark your calendars as the Grand Final will be on ESPN2, with the bounce sometime after 11pm USCDT!

Friday Jukebox 9.16.11

Before I continue, a small editorial here.

I remember on Tuesday, September 18, 2001, a week after the attacks at the Pentagon and the World Trade Center, things slowly began to get back to normal. Everybody began to get back to the things they're watching and listening. Patriotic themes popped up everywhere. Late night TV had patriotic themes, just to name a few. Sadly, in the years to come, most entertainment would go shit. The reason is because of the PC police. These PC pussies who bitch and complain about entertainment in general so that artists can conform to their standards. And that was the end product of 9/11/01.

Anyway, that's my view and that's the truth of today's music.

Friday Jukebox is about a retrospective of music from the past. And last Friday, I didn't post any music, instead posting the United States of America national anthem in respect for those killed on 9/11/01.

Now this week, it's back to music, like the NFL's slogan for this past week of opening regular season football games was "Back to Football." A campaign to reflect the NFL's labor dispute this past summer which results in more football in 2011.

Speaking of Friday Jukebox, this week's song is a becoming a favorite of mine. One, because it was released in 1983, and the other is from a pioneer of electronic music, Denis Le Page. Le Page, along with his (ex-wife) called the suburbs of Montreal home and recorded there. Had songs that reached the Billboard charts, especially in the early '80s. "Angel Eyes," from the 1983 album Lime 3, reached the top 15 in the Billboard dance music chart that year.

BELLATOR 50 Preview.

Since 2006, Bellator has put on 49 great shows, including knockouts that are better than a certain three letter promotion. Now it's their 50th. BELLATOR 50 is this Saturday night, LIVE on MTV2 and on EPIX HD. A 7pm local (6pm USCDT) start, and the main card is composed of all middleweight tournament quarterfinals.

At Bellator 43, you heard the name Bryan Baker. After his win in a feature fight...

And Jimmy Smith held his own more than Chris Myers did after Ian Johnson's proposal, just after Johnson ran in the winning 2 point conversion at the Fiesta Bowl in Boise State's dramatic win over OU. Baker will take on Jared Hess in one quarterfinal.

CARD:
Middleweight tournament
(185 lb/83.25kg)
Bryan Baker v Jared Hess
Victor Vianna v Sam Alvey
Brian Rogers v Victor O'Donnell
Zelg Galesic v Alexander Shlemenko

Again, it's at 6pm USCDT (7pm local) on MTV2. I'm guessing that at 9pm ET, another promotion has a pay-per-view at that time?

The 50th event for Bellator Fighting Championships. Where title shots are EARNED NOT GIVEN.

AFL Finals Series 2011: Semifinals preview.

Chris Judd and the Blues are fighting for the club's (and Brett Ratten's) future against Judd's old club, the West Coast Eagles in Saturday's semifinal. One of two semifinals that will take place this weekend in this, the second week of the AFL Finals Series 2011. The Eagles are looking for their first finals win since the 2006 AFL Grand Final.

The other semifinal will compose of the surprising Sydney Swans, who shocked St. Kilda by 25 points in the elimination final on Saturday night, as they take on Hawthorn. The Hawks may be without the services of Lance "Buddy" Franklin, who injured his knee on Friday night's qualifying final against Geelong. The Cats won the match, and along with Collingwood, will have a bye week until next weekend's Preliminary final.

As always, AFL.com.au will have live timing and scoring as well as radio feeds from 6PR, 3AW, 4MMM (Melbourne & Sydney), ABC, and SEN among others. Only the Eagles/Blues on Saturday will be live on ESPN3.

In other football news, Champions League is back and the Rugby World Cup is underway. Check them out. Football IS football!

9/11 Actuals: The First Minutes.

Sunday was the 10th anniversary of the attacks at the Pentagon and World Trade Center. Some actuals for those who either don't remember or too young to remember at all what we all experienced after 7:30pm USCDT, Tuesday, September 11, 2001.

Thoughts on the 2011 US Open.

An exciting two weeks of the final Grand Slam of 2011, whose biggest winner was the remants from Irene. Some players couldn't fly in to either LaGuardia or JFK before the opening day two weeks ago. And despite rain pushing back the singles finals, there's something you can look back on. For example, Sam Stosur. First from Australasia to win women's singles title in a grand slam in 31 years.

Also this is the last grand slam for one Dick Enberg. At 75, this year's US Open will be the last time that he will do a grand slam for any network. For years, you heard his voice for NBC's coverage of matches at the Championships at All-England Lawn and Tennis Club in the London suburb of Wimbledon (the tennis venue for the London games in 10 months), as well as the French Open at Roland-Garros in Paris, in which NBC has televised since the early '80s. He has joined CBS for the US Open, since CBS returned to the footy in 1998, as well as occasionally the last few years on ESPN. On the CBS broadcast of the men's final between Rafa Nadal and Nole "the Joker" Djokovic, a video package on Enberg was shown (I do believe). Thanks for all those years. My. Oh. My.

Congrats to all the winners, including Stosur and Nole. I'd love to see centre court (Arthur Ashe Stadium) with a retractable roof, hopefully it'll happen soon.

Next year, ATP and WTA players have to deal with FIVE major tournaments, counting the London Olympics.

See ya at Melbourne in four months.

Friday Jukebox 9.9.11

There will be no FJ this week. The reason is just to give it a break, and pay tribute to those killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Sunday will mark the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

Don't worry, another FJ will appear next week.

America we stand. God bless America.

BELLATOR 49 Saturday Night!

The Weedman will be there. His match with Chris Lozano is among the four welterweight quarterfinal fights on Saturday night's card as the new season of BELLATOR kicks off with the welterweight tournament. The previous welterweight tournament was held in the spring and won by Jay Hieron, who is now the #1 contender for the welterweight title held by Ben Askren.

CARD:
Welterweight Tournament
(170 lb./76.5 kg)
Steve Carl v Douglas Lima
Luis Santos v Dan Hornbuckle
Ben Saunders v Chris Cisneros

Here We Go Again!

"Carey's Cutie" sues producers Mike Richards (also EP's Wayne Brady version of Let's Make a Deal), and Adam Sandler (NOT THE ACTOR!) over sexual harrassment on the show.

Everything is continuing to go wrong at The Price is Wrong Bitch. This is a perfect example. Someone must have pulled the red and black "X" chips out of that bag (a reference to the "3 Strikes" pricing game).

Reese Witherspoon Struck by Car.

Only minor injuries. Stuck whilst jogging.

Another Sports Tragedy.

Another huge tragedy in sports. This time, it is in the air. KHL's Lokomotiv Yaroslavl. Just about everyone died, including some of those who played here in North America, especially in the NHL.

link.

Despite the tragedy, the team according to sources, including the KHL, are looking to continue operations.

One of the worst disasters to a sports team, that ranks up there with Marshall 1970 and Manchester United 1958 among others.

AFL Finals Series 2011: A Preview.

AFL Finals time begins tonight!

Defending premiers Collingwood headline the 2011 Finals Series hosting West Coast. The Eagles, last year's wooden spooners are making their first Finals appearance since 2007, when they were third seed, lost to Port in the qualifying final and lost to the Pies in the semifinals.

On Friday night, Geelong and Hawthorn will open Finals play in a qualifying final. The Cats are making their return trip to the finals under new head coach Chris Scott, replacing "Bomber" Thompson who left the team before the start of the season.

St. Kilda and Sydney will be the first elimination final and the first bounce will be on Saturday night, while the other elimination final will feature Carlton and Essendon. The Bombers are making their first finals trip after a rough season under 2010. Former premiership player James Hird replaced Matt Knights as the Bombers' new head coach. Hird, who played 16 years in AFL, has a premiership with the Bombers in 2000.

Check out AFANA's website for TV times. Also most of the finals matches will be on ESPN3. AFL.com.au as usual has live timing, scoring and radio feeds from 3AW, 6PR, MMM, K-Rock, ABC and SEN among others.

Game Day!

Self explanatory. Now let's hope the Prez can hurry the fuck up with the Address!

NFL 2011: My Predictions!

"Back to Football" is the slogan of the NFL 2011 season after their almost four month lockout. Compared to 1982 and 1987, at least there's still a 16 game, 17 round slate of regular season footy in 2011.

Here is how I predict the divisions in 2011...

AMERICAN

East
1. Jets
2. Patriots
3. Bills
4. Dolphins

South
1. Jaguars
2. Colts
3. Titans
4. Texans

North
1. Ravens
2. Steelers
3. Browns
4. Bengals

West
1. Chiefs
2. Raiders
3. Chargers
4. Broncos

Divisional winners: Jets (1), Ravens (2), Chiefs (3), Jaguars (4)
Wild card: Raiders (5), Steelers (6)
Playoffs: Chiefs over Steelers, Jaguars over Raiders
Divisionals: Ravens over Chiefs, Jets over Jaguars
Championship: Jets over Ravens

NATIONAL

East
1. Eagles
2. Giants
3. Cowboys
4. Redskins

South
1. Falcons
2. Buccaneers
3. Saints
4. Panthers

North
1. Packers
2. Lions
3. Bears
4. Vikings

West
1. Rams
2. Seahawks
3. 49ers
4. Cardinals

Divisional winners: Packers (1) Falcons (2), Rams (3), Eagles (4)
Wild card: Buccaneers (5), Lions (6)
Wild card predictions: Lions over Rams, Buccaneers over Eagles
Divisional: Lions over Packers, Falcons over Buccaneers
Championship: Falcons over Lions

Super Bowl XLVI at Lucas Oil Stadium: Jets v Falcons
Jets over Falcons

But then again, it's the NFL, who knows what will happen! Not just NFL, but gridiron football in general has seen stranger stuff happen!

So there you have it folks. Packers/Saints on Thursday night on NBC! Let's all be there!*

Feel free to agree or disagree with my predictions for the 2011 NFL season!

*-"Let's all be there" was the slogan for NBC's 1983-84 season campaign. Not everyone will watch the game, because OSU/Arizona on ESPN and the US Open on ESPN2. Some heavy duty channel changing will go on.

WWE Network: Destined for Failure?

Don't watch WW(F)E anymore now that their brands are dumbed down.

Now that's all said and done, read that on Monday night, WWE Network promos were shown on RAW. Could this mean a new network that will never last long?

Look at the basics. Titan/WWFE's past ventures, such as the World Bodybuilding Federation and the XFL-a league with potential to be the best competitive league outside the NFL-went dark. Now a channel devoted to all things WWE-including its libraries like Extreme Championship Wrestling, World Championship Wrestling, AWA, World Class, etc.-will be launched next year.

My take on this-it will join itself among the defunct channels such as CNNfn, CNNSI, Sega Channel-among others. I feel that half of the broadcasting day will be WWE programming and half will be infomercials, including their ShopZone merchandise program.

A WWE Network will only hurt the professional wrestling industry more than they're doing right now. Pro wrestling is still in a weak market, because of the economy, while it's nearest two competitors-Impact Wrestling (Total Nonstop Action) and Ring of Honor are slowly picking up more fans from WWE, despite both IMPACT and ROH with mediocre storylines that are better than WWE does with RAW and SMACKDOWN. That is why mixed martial-arts is growing at a rapid rate.

What WWE is doing (they're still publicly traded on the "Big Board" under ticker symbol 'WWE') is what ZUFFA is trying to do in MMA. ZUFFA President Dana White is also proposing a channel devoted to the Ultimate Fighting Championship and all things ZUFFA. The proposed UFC Channel-if it's launched-could end up going dark in a few years once it's launched.

So the whole meaning of all of this: WWE Network will have lower ratings than Fox Business, which is(?) still the lowest rated cable channel on TV. We'll wait and see what happens next.

Regis to Leave "Live." The Date is Set.

Mark your calendars down...Friday, November 18. As usual, please consult local listings.

This will bring an end of about over three decades of Philbin along with the list of co-hosts on his show, from Kathie Lee (Johnson) Gifford to Kelly Ripa and Joy Philbin among others. His morning show has been taped (or aired live in US Eastern time in most markets) from the studios at ABC7 New York, and aired in syndication since September 1988 (show is distributed by ABC Studios).

I liked the time where the wrestlers appeared on Live, whether it was Bill Goldberg or Hulk Hogan to the Undertaker and the late Yokozuna. This was one of a few number of talk shows that promoted professional wrestling pay-per-views and you the fans must owe it to guys like Executive Producer Michael Gelman for doing that.

Philbin is a great host, liked him on Millionaire, when it was on ABC primetime in late '90s-early '00s. Who knows where he will go from here. God speed.

IAAF World Championships 2011: What We Learned From It.

These 9 days of the 13th installment of the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, South Korea proved to be what you should expect in 11 months in London.

World records. Not many shattered during these nine days...until the final day and the final race. Men's 4x100m relay. Usain Bolt anchored Jamaica with a world record run as that baton was passed to him at turn 4, and the rest was history.

US and Jamaica are still the biggest rivalry on the track side, but also Russia, Great Britain and France have solid runners to watch out for. Same could be said for the marathon where the typical rivalry between runners from Ethiopia and Kenya continue to pour on from the marathons like Boston, NYC, London into the worlds.

Some other things to note, some records like those set by Javier Sotomayor in the men's high jump and Sergei Bubka in the pole vault, after these nine days-have still been untouched for years. Who knows what's gonna happen within the year.

US had the most medals at 25, including key wins with Trey Hardee taking the decathlon to surprise runs by Jenny Barringer Simpson in the women's 1500m and in the last leg of the men's 4x400 with LaShawn Merritt from nowhere in the last turn bringing it home for the USA.

The road to London has just begun.

Friday Jukebox 9.2.11

Is it Tuesday, September 6, 9pm CDT yet?

To get you ready for SAMCRO season 4, this is Curtis Stigers & the Forest Rangers' "This Life." The theme of the show!

I want y'all to have a safe weekend on this, North American Labo(u)r Day weekend, truly the last holiday of the summer.

Okay GLAAD. Harden the Fuck Up.

Here we go again, another reason why comedy should NEVER be taken seriously. Chelsea Handler in hot water with GLAAD over jokes made on Chaz Bono joining the cast of the new installment of US version of Strictly Come Dancing. Jo Koy, Bill Bellamy and Fortune Feimster were the roundtable guests.

When will special interests groups like GLAAD realize that it's a fucking joke and it's comedy? Do groups like GLAAD ever watch other shows on late night regarding gay jokes? Leno, Letterman, Handler, Conan, et al., have done it over the years.

GLAAD must be on that Stalinist Kool-Aid that most other groups like the NAACP are drinking. They don't represent the LGBT community at all. Just money grubbing scum.

Reminds me of the Chaser and their attacks (and the Chaser is right as always) on the newsmagazines on Seven and Nine networks in Australia, on the lack of consistency thereof on their respective shows. Also everyone knows that those who watch Today Tonight and A Current Affair (the original ACA, in Australia, not the defunct US newsmagazine that went off the air in 1996) and hate the Chaser must be on that Stalinist Kool-Aid that GLAAD is drinking. Plain and simple.

I love Handler, but people like GLAAD are trying to hurt their credibility as well as the people who support GLAAD.

So to the folks at GLAAD, be GLAAD that Handler is still a big supporter of LGBT and not an opposer. Harden the fuck up already.
