14 days until the first day of the London Olympics. This is a preview of the sailing events at the London games.
The picturesque Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (pictured) is the venue for the sailing events at the London games. 388 athletes representing 63 countries, and 77 boats are accounted.
Australian and Spanish teams are tied for the most wins in the 470 class. The defending Olympic champions are Australian-Nathan Wilmot and Malcolm Page in the men, and the team of Elise Rechichi and Tessa Parkinson in the women. An Aussie team could break the mold this year in both races.
There is no repeat winner in the 49er class; Jonas Waner and Martin Kirketerp Ibsen are the defending Olympic champions from Beijing 2008.
Two-time Finn winner Ben Ainslie is hoping to tie Paul Elvstrom for most wins in Finn, with three.
No repeat winner in the men's and women's sailboard; Tom Ashley and Yin Jian are the defending Olympic champions.
At Beijing 2008, the Laser Radial class debuted; and won by Anna Tunnicliffe. This year, the Elliott 6m will debut and will be the only new event on the schedule for the sailing.
