116 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. Up next on the parade of nations: Moldova (MDA).
Moldova has participated in the summer Olympics since Atlanta 1996, the first summer games that they competed as an independent nation (before then, Moldovan athletes competed with the Unified Team at Barcelona). Since then, five medals have been won by Moldovan athletes in these summer games.
None of those are gold medals, however, two are silver. The first silver won by a Moldovan athlete in the summer games is by Nicolae Juravschi and Victor Reneischi in the men's 500m Canadian doubles (canoeing) at Atlanta 1996. Moldova's other silver was won by Oleg Moldovan in the men's 10m running target (shooting) at Sydney 2000.
The other three medals for Moldova are bronze. Sergei Mureico won bronze in the men's super heavyweight class of Greco-Roman (?) wrestling, defeating Petro Kotok (UKR) in the third place match at Atlanta 1996. Boxer Vitalie Grusac won bronze in the welterweight class at Sydney 2000, while another boxer, Vaeceslav Gojan, won bronze in the bantamweight class at Beijing 2008.
As of now, 8 Moldovan athletes are headed to London to compete in 2 events-in boxing and in various athletics events.
