London 2012: The Countdown Series: India

139 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. Next up on the parade of nations: India (IND).


The nation has competed in the summer Olympics since the first modern Olympics of 1896. 20 medals have been won by Indian athletes, including nine gold medals.

Abhinav Bindra (pictured) is the only individual medalist from India. At Beijing 2008, he won gold in the men's 10m air rifle (shooting).

The rest of the gold medals for India was won by men's (field) hockey. Eight gold medals were won by that program.

As of now, 46 Indian athletes will head to London and will compete in six events-including various athletics and swimming events as well as boxing and (field) hockey.
