London 2012: The Countdown Series: Mexico

117 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. Up next on the parade of nations: Mexico (MEX).


Mexico has participated in the summer Olympics since the first modern Olympics of 1896. A total of 54 medals have been won by Mexican athletes in the summer games. 12 are gold medals.


To this day, Humberto Mariles (pictured) remains the only multiple gold medalist from Mexico. He has two gold medlas, in the team and individual jumping (equestrian) events at London 1948.


At Beijing in 2008, Mexico picked up two gold medals, both in taekwondo. Guillermo Perez (pictured) won the men's flyweight class, while Maria Espinosa won the women's heavyweight class.

As of now, 52 Mexican athletes are headed to London to compete in 16 events, including various athletics and swimming events, as well as taekwondo, cycling, wrestling, and modern pentathlon among others.

Mexico was the host country for the 1968 summer games in Mexico City.
