London 2012: The Countdown Series: Luxembourg

121 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. Up next on the parade of nations: Luxembourg (LUX).


Luxembourg has participated in the summer Olympics since the first modern Olympics of 1896. A total of six medals have been won by their athletes, including four gold medals.


Josy Barthel (pictured with the tag number 406) won the men's 1500m final at Helsinki 1952, the most recent gold medal for Luxembourg.

Jean Jacoby remains the only multiple gold medalist for Luxembourg in the Olympics, with two gold medals. He won gold in the mixed painting category at Paris 1924 and again in the drawings and water colors, mixed painting category at Amsterdam 1928.

Michel Theato brought home the first gold for Luxembourg, at Paris 1900 in the men's marathon.

As of now, Luxembourg will send six athletes to London to compete in four events, including cycling and swimming.
