122 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. Next up on the parade of nations: Lithuania (LTU).
Lithuania has participated in the summer Olympics since 1924. From 1924-36, they competed as an independent nation. From 1948-88, Lithuanian athletes competed with the rest of the Soviets, until 1992. In 1992, Lithuania would once again start competing as an independent nation. A total of 16 medals have been won by Lithuanian athletes in the summer games, including 4 gold medals.
Half of the four gold medals were won by Virgilijus Alekna (pictured), who won the men's discus throw at Sydney 2000 and again at Athens 2004.
Romas Ubertas also won gold in the men's discus throw. He did accomplish that, at Barcelona 1992, and became Lithuania's first gold medalist.
Daina Gudzineviciute also won gold in the summer games, in the women's trap shooting at Sydney 2000.
As of now, 33 Lithuanian athletes are headed to London to compete in nine events, including athletics, cycling, boxing and wrestling.
