London 2012: The Countdown Series: Philippines

99 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. Next up on the parade of nations: Philippines (PHI).

The Philippines have participated in the summer Olympics since 1924. A total of nine medals have been won by Filipino athletes in these summer games.

Philippines, despite no gold medals, have two silver medals to account for. Boxer Mansueto Velasco (pictured) is the most recent medalist from the Philippines. He lost in the men's light-flyweight final to Daniel Bozhinov (BUL) at Atlanta 1996. The only other silver medal for the Philippines was won by another boxer, Anthony Villanueva, who lost in the final of the men's featherweight division to Stanislav Stepashkin (URS) at Tokyo 1964.

The rest of the medals-of course-are bronze. Swimmer Teofilo Yldefonso won two bronze medals, finishing third in the men's 200m breaststroke at Amsterdam 1928 and Los Angeles 1932, the only multiple medalist for the Philippines. Boxer Roel Velasco is the most recent bronze medalist; winning a bronze in the men's light-flyweight class at Barcelona 1992.

As of now, 3 Filipino athletes are headed to London to compete in three events-in athletics (long jump), boxing (men's light-flyweight), and judo (men's 100kg).
