London 2012: The Countdown Series: Morocco

113 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. Up next on the parade of nations: Morocco (MAR).

Morocco has participated in the summer Olympics since 1960, and 21 medals have been won by Moroccan athletes in the summer games, including six gold medals.

Hicham El Guerrouj (pictured at center with tag number 2469) remains the only multiple gold medalist in the summer Olympics from Morocco. He won two gold medals-both at Athens 2004-in the men's 1500m and men's 5000m finals (athletics).

Said Aouita, one of the more versatile runners of the 1980s, brought home one of the first two gold medals for Morocco, at Los Angeles 1984 in the men's 5000m (athletics).

As of now, 55 Moroccan athletes are headed to London to compete in 8 events, including athletics, cycling, swimming, wrestling and taekwondo, as well as a men's football (soccer) team that qualified for the games.
