London 2012: The Countdown Series: Portugal

97 days until the first day of the London Olympics. Next up on the parade of nations: Portugal (POR).


Portugal has competed in the summer Olympics since 1912. 22 medals have been won by Portuguese athletes in the summer games, including four gold medals.


Carlos Lopes won Portugal's first gold medal at Los Angeles 1984 in the men's marathon (athletics). Nelson Evora (pictured) won the most recent gold for Portugal, in the men's triple jump (athletics) at Beijing 2008. Rosa Mota won gold in the women's marathon (athletics) at Seoul 1988, and Fernanda Ribeiro won gold in the women's 10,000m (athletics) at Atlanta 1996.

As of now, 59 Portuguese athletes are headed to London and will compete in ten events, including various athletics and swimming events as well as cycling.
