London 2012: the Countdown Series: Peru

100, counting, 100 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. Up next on the parade of nations: Peru (PER).

Peru has participated in the summer Olympics since 1936. Four medals have been won by Peruvian athletes in these summer games, with only one being a gold medal.

The lone gold medal in the summer games for Peru was won by shooter Edwin Vasquez at London 1948. He won gold in the men's 50m free pistol.

The other three medals won by Peru in the summer games were all silver medals. Francisco Boza won silver in the mixed trap shooting event at Los Angeles 1984. At Barcelona 1992, Juan Jorge Giha Jr. won silver in the mixed skeet shooting event. The women's volleyball team won silver after losing to the Soviet Union in the final at Seoul 1988.

As of now, five Peruvian athletes are headed to London to compete in five events, including various athletics events and taekwondo.
