London 2012: The Countdown Series: Poland

98 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. Up next on the parade of nations: Poland (POL).


Poland has participated in the summer Olympics since 1924. A total of 269 medals have been won by Polish athletes in the summer games, including 65 gold medals.


Robert Korzeniowski (pictured) has the most gold medals among Polish athletes at the summer games with four gold medals. He won the 20km walk (athletics) at Sydney 2000, and in the 50km walk (athletics) at Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004.

Irena Szewinska Kirszenstein won three gold medals. She won the women's 200m (athletics) at Mexico City 1968, the women's 400m (athletics) at Montreal 1976, and was part of the winning 4x100m relay team that won at Tokyo 1964.

Eleven Polish athletes have two gold medals each:

  • Waldemar Baszanowski (weightlifting)
  • Jerzy Kulej (boxing)
  • Jozef Zapedzki (shooting)
  • Witold Woyda (fencing)
  • Waldemar Legien (judo)
  • Andrzej Wronski (wrestling)
  • Arkadiusz Skrzypaszek (modern pentathlon)
  • Renata Mauer Rozanska (shooting)
  • Tomasz Kucharski (rowing)
  • Robert Sycz (rowing)

One of Poland's most recent gold medalists is Tomas Majewski. Majewski (pictured), won gold in the men's shot put at Beijing 2008.

At the team level, men's football (soccer) won gold at Munich 1972, after defeating Hungary in the final. Men's volleyball also won gold, defeating the Soviet Union in the final at Montreal 1976.

As of now, 158 Polish athletes are headed to London and will compete in ten events, including athletics, cycling, swimming, taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling. Men's volleyball has also qualified for the London games as well.
