London 2012: The Countdown Series: Serbia

85 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. Up next on the parade of nations: Serbia (SRB).

Serbia first participated in the summer Olympics in 1912. After the formation and breakup of both Yugoslavia, as well as Serbia and Montenegro, Serbia would once again compete as an independent nation at Beijing 2008. At the Beijing 2008 Olympics, three medals were won by Serbian athletes.

Perhaps the Beijing 2008 games will be best known for Michael Phelps' eight medals, but also when Phelps edged Milorad 'Mike' Cavic (pictured) in the men's 100m butterfly (swimming) final-by a fingertip! Despite Cavic's protest filed against Fina, the results stood and Fina's request from Cavic was overturned. Cavic's silver was the lone silver for Serbia, in just their second summer games as an independent nation.

Besides Cavic's silver, there are no gold medals. However, Serbia has two bronze medals, both from Beijing 2008. Novak Djokovic (pictured), currently the world's #1 singles tennis player, defeated James Blake (USA) in the third place singles' match.

The other bronze for Serbia came at Beijing when the men's water polo team defeated Montenegro for third place.

As of now, 75 Serbian athletes are headed to London to compete in twelve events, including various athletics and swimming events, plus wrestling, taekwondo, boxing and cycling. Men's handball and water polo teams have also qualified for the London games.

Caps-Rangers will be one of four conference semifinal series that begins tonight with the Coyotes/Predators.

It's that time again. The Mavs struggled this season despite injuries and offseason losses especially in this lockout-shortened season. The defending world champs enter the playoffs as the 7th seed in the West as they begin their series with the Thunder on Saturday.

Bulls and Spurs are the number one seeds in their respective conferences.

Also don't laugh, the Clippers are back in the playoffs.

Dick Clark, a Retrospective: Part 2.

As you all know by now, Dick Clark died yesterday at age 82 because of a heart attack. A true blue legend of daytime television.

We all love (not everybody) Dick Clark because of his emceeing skills as host of the Pyramid, American Bandstand and Rockin' New Year's Eve just to name a few.

This is a following clip from the syndicated Challengers series from 1990-91, an updated version of the Who, What and When? Game from the 1960s (or 1970s). Here we see a contestant going for the $60,000 Ultimate Challenge. Will he pull it off?

This is from early in its run.

This is the match, ABC's Howard Cosell on commentary.

The remaining five medals for Puerto Rico are all bronze medals. Juan Venegas brought home Puerto Rico's first medal at London 1948, when the boxer defeated Alvaro Vincente (ESP) for third place in the men's bantamweight class. The most recent medal for Puerto Rico is that of boxer Daniel Santos, who won bronze at Atlanta 1996 in the men's welterweight class.

Here is your First Subject...Go! Dick Clark (1929-2012), a Retrospective: Part 1

Dick Clark on the set of the $25,000 Pyramid, filmed at CBS Television City in Hollywood, California, by Bob Stewart/BASADA Inc. 1982-88.

Dick Clark died today (4/18), after a heart attack. He was 82.

Nicknamed "America's Oldest Teenager," Clark, a native of Philadelphia (Pennsylvania not Mississippi!) was best known as the host of American Bandstand, which ran from 1956 until 1989 on both ABC and syndication, as well as Rockin' New Years Eve from Times Square, an annual New Year's Eve tradition on ABC for years. His last appearance was back on December 31.

But some, even most of us know him as a game show host of both the $25,000 Pyramid (CBS daytime 1982-88) and the $100,000 Pyramid (1985-88, through syndication via Fox). He also did The Challengers, a show where he both hosted and was co-executive producer. The Challengers ran in syndication in the 1990-91 season. His other game show hosting duties included the short-lived NBC show Scattergories (based on the Milton Bradley/Hasbro game of course) and Winning Lines, which was a primetime series that ran on CBS during the 1999-2000 season, marking his return to CBS since daytime Pyramid was cancelled in 1988.

We also know Clark was a businessman and ran dick clark productions inc., a production company that oversaw Bandstand as well as The Challengers, and several awards and tele-movies over the years, such as 1979's Elvis, which starred Kurt Russell as Elvis Presley.

So here is a perfect example of Clark and his fine hosting duties. From daytime Pyramid in 1984.

Here is your first subject...go!

London 2012: The Countdown Series: Panama

103 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. Up next on the parade of nations: Panama (PAN).

Panama has participated in the summer Olympics since 1928. Three medals have been won by their athletes, including a gold medal.

Beijing 2008 were the games that Panama finally saw one of their athletes win Olympic gold. In the men's long jump final, Irving Saladino (pictured) claimed gold with a mark of 8.34m, the shortest gold medal winner since Munich 1972.

The other two medals for Panama were bronze medals. Both were won by Lloyd LaBeach in the men's 100m and 200m (athletics) finals at London 1948.

As of now, Panama will send four to London and will compete in athletics (men's 200m and long jump), and in swimming (men's 100m breaststroke and 200m butterfly).

Santorum Drops Out!

Another one has bit the dust... Who's next? Romney?

London 2012: The Countdown Series: Pakistan

104 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. Next up on the parade of nations: Pakistan (PAK).

Pakistan has participated in the summer Olympics since 1948, and a total of ten medals have been won by Pakistani athletes in the summer games, including three gold medals.

The only three gold medals in the summer games that were won by Pakistan, were those by the men's (field) hockey team. At Rome 1960, they won gold after defeating India in the final. Eight years later, at Mexico City 1968, they defeated Australia in the final. Their most recent Olympic win was at Los Angeles 1984, when they defeated West Germany in the final.

As of now, the only Pakistani representation at London will be that of the men's (field) hockey team.

NCAA D-I Championship Weekend in Review.

40-0 is the way to go.

Despite battling Bell's palsy, Kim Mulkey finally got her national title. The perfect season was perfect. Then here comes the recruitment issues, in which not only the Lady Bears, but the Bears men's team both just recently received three-years probation by the NCAA. Shameful way to end the season.

Speaking of the men's title, it came as a surprise that Kentucky's men's team-mostly of freshmen-won the national title in New Orleans.

And BC won its fifth national title in men's ice hockey, but it was a great run nonetheless by Ferris State to get this far in their program. Well done and we'll hear more from FSU in the near future.

That is just a short review, folks.
