147 days to go until the start of the London Olympics. Next up on the parade of nations: Greece (GRE).
Since the first modern Olympics of 1896, Greek athletes in the summer Olympics have won a total of 144 medals. Of those 144, 39 medals being gold.
Pyrros Dimas (pictured) and Akakios Kakiasvili lead the way for individuals in the summer Olympics from Greece with 3 gold medals each, both in weightlifting.
Dimas won three gold medals in the men's light heavyweight division-at Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000. Kakiasvili did the same, except his was in two divisions. He won middle heayweight gold at Barcelona in 1992 (as a member of the Unified Team) and at Sydney 2000. He won gold in the heayweight I class at Atlanta 1996.
Two others have multiple gold medals from Greece-Georgios Orfanidis and Ioannis Georgiadis. Both have two gold medals each. Orfanidis, a shooter, captured the gold at the Athenian games of 1896 and 1906. He won gold at Athens 1896 in men's 300m three position free rifle and again in Athens in 1906 in the 50m free pistol. Georgiadis, a fencer, first won gold at Athens 1896 in the men's individual sabre. He won that same event at the Athenian games of 1906 as well.
Greece was the host country for the 1896, 1906 and 2004 summer Olympics, all in Athens.
As of now, 64 Greek athletes will participate in nine events, including athletics and swimming events, as well as taekwondo.
