London 2012: The Countdown Series: Georgia

150 days to go until the start of the London Olympics. Next up on the parade of nations: Georgia (GEO).

The former Soviet nation's first time in the summer Olympics was the Atlanta 1996 games, best known for their "warm welcome" by the crowd at the opening ceremonies, if you know what I mean. Since then, Georgian athletes have won 18 medals in the summer games, including five gold medals.

The five gold medals won by Georgian athletes in these summer Olympics were won by five different competitors. Two were won by wrestlers Revaz Mindorashvili (pictured) and Manuchar K'virk'elia at the Beijing games in 2008. Mindorashvili won gold in the men's light heayweight division of freestyle, while K'virk'elia won gold in the middleweight division of the Greco-Roman class.

Two have won gold in judo in the summer Olympics-Zurab Zviadauri and Irakli Tsirekidze. Zviadauri won gold at Athens 2004 in the men's middleweight division and Tsirekidze won gold in that same class, at Beijing 2008.

The only other gold medalist in the summer Olympics from Georgia is Giorgi Asanidze. Asanidze won gold in the men's light heayweight division of weightlifting at Athens 2004.

As of now, 11 Georgian athletes will participate in five events-including weightlifting and wrestling.

Up next: Germany
