152 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. Next up on the parade of nations: France (FRA).
Since 1896, French athletes in the summer Olympics have won a total of 693 medals. 211 of those 693 being gold medals.
Three French athletes have won four gold medals in the summer Olympics, the most of any summer Olympian from France. The late Max Decugis (pictured) won four golds on the tennis court and mostly in doubles play. At Athens 1906, he won gold in singles and doubles, and in mixed doubles at both Athens and again at Antwerp 1920.
Fencers Lucien Gaudin and Christian d'Oriola both won four gold medals each. Gaudin won two at Paris 1924 in the men's team Epee and foil, and again at Amsterdam 1928 in the men's individual foil and Epee. d'Oriola first won gold at London 1948, in the men's team foil, then at Helsinki 1952, he won two more-in the men's team and individual foil-before finishing his Olympic career with a gold at Melbourne 1956 in the men's individual foil.
Nine French athletes have won at least three golds each: cyclists Paul Masson, Robert Charpentier, Daniel Morelon, Felicia Ballanger and Florian Rousseau; fencers Georges, Count de la Falaise, Roger Ducret and Jehan de Buhan, and Maria Jose Perec, who won three medals on the track in both the women's 200m and 400m races at both Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996.
Over two dozen French athletes have won two gold medals in their careers in the summer Olympics.
In addition, men's water polo won gold at Paris 1924, and men's soccer (football) won gold at Los Angeles 1984.
France was the host country of the 1900 and 1924 summer Olympics, both of which were held in Paris.
As of now, 214 athletes from France will be showcased in 19 events-including various athletics and swimming events, as well as taekwondo, weightlifting, wrestling, boxing and in these team events: women's soccer (football), men's basketball, and men's handball.
