London 2012: The Countdown Series: Finland

153 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. Next up on the parade of nations: Finland (FIN).


Since 1896, Finnish athletes have won 308 medals in the summer Olympics. Of those 308, 106 being gold medals.


The late great Paavo Nurmi (pictured) won nine gold medals at three summer games. At Antwerp 1920, he won gold in the men's 10,000m, and in team and individual competition in cross country. At Paris 1924, he won five gold medals in the men's 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, and again in team and individual cross country. Finally he ended his historic Olympic career at Amsterdam 1928 with a gold in the men's 10,000m.

Ville Ritola won five gold medals. At Paris 1924 in the men's 10,000m, 3000m team and steeplechase and team cross country and at Amsterdam 1928 in the men's 5000m.

Two Finnish athletes have four golds in the summer games-Hannes Kolemainen and Lasse Viren.

Three Finish athletes have three medals each-rower Pertti Karppinen, and gymnasts Veikko Huhtanen and Paavo Aaltonen.

Several Finnish athletes have two gold medals each.

As of now-40 Finnish athletes will compete in eight events, including athletics and swimming events, taekwondo and wrestling.

Finland was the host country for the 1952 summer Olympics, which took place in Helsinki.
