194 days to go until the first order of business at London. Next up on the parade of nations: Azerbaijan (AZE).
The former Soviet Republic has competed in the summer Olympics since Atlanta in 1996 (first year of competition as an independent nation). Since that time, 16 medals were won by Azerbaijan athletes.
The most recent gold medalist for Azerbajian is Elnur Memmedli (pictured above, in blue). Memmedli won gold in Beijing in the 73kg judo. As of now Azerbaijan will have 30 athletes in 10 sports, almost half in three combat sports-taekwondo, wrestling and boxing, showing how truly the country is as one of the hotspots for combat sports.
