London 2012: The Countdown Series: Argentina

198 days to go. The parade of nations continue with Argentina (ARG). What does Manu Ginobili and Leo Messi have in common?

Well, they both scored Olympic gold. Ginobili, the flag bearer for Argentina at Athens in 2004, led the men's basketball team to gold in an stunning upset over USA in the gold medal match.

Messi, who was cleared to participate at Beijing in 2008 after a conflict between the Argentine national team and the Barcelona Football Club (La Liga), helped led the men's football (soccer) team to their second straight gold medal at the Olympics.

Those were among the 17 gold medals that Argentina has earned since they first started competing in the summer Olympics in 1896, the year of the first modern summer Olympics. In all, Argentina has won 66 medals at the summer games.

As of now, 97 athletes will represent Argentina at London, including men's basketball (Ginobili will no doubt be back), men's and women's (field) hockey, and men's handball. 14 sports will be represented among those representing Argentina.
