London 2012: The Countdown Series: Armenia

197 days until London. Next up on our parade of nations: Armenia (ARM).

The former Soviet republic has been at the summer Olympics since 1996, the first summer games where the former Soviet states first competed as independent nations after the USSR breakup of 1991 (Lillehammer 1994 was the very first Olympics in general in which the former Soviet states actually competed as their own independent nations).

Since 1996, the country picked up nine medals, including Armen Nazaryan's gold in the Greco-Roman flyweight class at Atlanta (Nazaryan would win another gold in 2000, representing Bulgaria). It's lone silver was also from Atlanta in '96, when Armen Mkrtchyan finished runner-up in the freestyle lightweight class (keep in mind, US picked up three golds in the freestyle at Atlanta-Kendall Cross in the 57kg, Tom Brands in the 62kg and Kurt Angle in the 100kg). In all along with 7 bronze medals, the country earned 9 medals in summer Olympics competition.

As of now, 10 competitors are representing 4 sports, including wrestling.
