Syria has participated in the summer Olympics since 1948. Only three medals have been won by Syrian athletes in the summer games, including a gold medal.
At Atlanta 1996, Ghada Shouaa (pictured) brought home Syria's first and only Olympic gold to date after she won the women's heptathlon (athletics).
Wrestler Joseph Atiyeh took home the silver in the men's freestyle heavyweight class of wrestling after he lost to Louis Banach (USA) at Los Angeles 1984. The only silver medal for Syria.
Boxer Naser Al Shami took home the bronze in the men's heavyweight class of boxing at Athens 2004. The only bronze for Syria.
