Sochi 2014: The Countdown Series: Kazakhstan

67 days remaining until the opening ceremonies (66 until the first day of competition) at Sochi 2014. Up next on the countdown: Kazakhstan.


Kazakhstan, like other former Soviet republics, made their winter Olympics debut at Lillehammer 1994. They have sent athletes to every winter Olympic games ever since. Six medals have been won by Kazakhs in the winter games, including a gold medal.


The only gold medal for Kazakhstan in the winter games was won by Vladimir Smirnov (pictured), as he won the 50km cross country race at Lillehammer 1994.

Twelve quota spots available for the Kazakh delegation, including spots in speed skating, biathlon and short track speed skating.
