Japan made their winter Olympics debut at St. Moritz 1928, and has sent athletes to every winter Olympics games with the exception of St. Moritz 1948. A total of 37 medals have been won by the Japanese in the winter games, including nine gold medals.
Only three Japanese athletes have won multiple gold medals in the winter games, including Kazuyoshi Funaki (pictured), who is the most recent multiple gold medalist for Japan in the winter games. He won two gold medals, both of which at Nagano 1998, as the ski jumper won the large hill event as well as a gold as a part of the team large hill event. He along with Takanori Kono and Kenji Ogiwara, are the lone multiple gold medalists for Japan in the winter games. Kono and Ogiwara, both competed in the Nordic combined events as a member of the team events, and won twice respectively, at both Albertville 1992 and Lillehammer 1994.
For Sochi, 29 quota spots available for Japan. Women's ice hockey qualified for the tournament, as well as quota spots available for biathlon, speed skating and short track speed skating.
Japan has hosted the winter Olympics twice: the first time was at Sapporo 1972, and most recently at Nagano 1998.
