London 2012: The Countdown Series: Vietnam

53 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. Up next on the parade of nations: Vietnam (VIE).


Vietnam has participated in the summer Olympics since 1952; only two medals have been won by Vietnamese athletes in the summer games.


Despite no gold medals, the first medal for Vietnam in the Olympics was won by Tran Hieu Ngan (pictured), who won a silver in the women's featherweight (taekwondo), after losing in the final to Jung Jae Eun (KOR) at Sydney 2000.

 The most recent medal for Vietnam was won by weightlifter Hoang Anh Tuan (pictured), who won silver for his runner-up finish in the men's bantamweight (weightlifting) class at Beijing 2008.

As of now, 17 Vietnamese athletes in 11 events, including various athletics and swimming events as well as judo, taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling.
