London 2012: The Countdown Series: Great Britain, part 2

47 days to go until the first day of the London Olympics. Staying on the Great Britain (GBR) front, there has been lots of great performances individually in the summer games for Great Britain.

For starters, some of Great Britain's strongest Olympic programs to date have mostly been athletics and track cycling, both full of stellar performers in the Olympics.

Linford Christie (pictured with the number 695 on his tag) stole the show in the men's 100m (athletics) final at Barcelona 1992 ahead of heavily favored Americans Dennis Mitchell, who took home the bronze and Leroy Burrell.

But that's not all! Denise Lewis (pictured) scored the gold in the heptathlon (athletics) at Sydney 2000. Add those along with Christine Ohuruogu's gold in the 400m (athletics) final at Beijing 2008, and Great Britain has proclaimed themselves as one of the best track programs in the world.

In addition to Chris Hoy's three gold medals at Beijing, Vicki Pendleton (pictured) and Rebecca Romero helped Great Britain's track cycling program prove themselves as the best in the world. Pendleton won the women's sprint at Beijing 2008, while Romero won gold in the 3000m individual pursuit also at Beijing 2008. GB track cycling hopefully can raise the bar for other programs, especially in their own backyard.

Part three will be devoted to the team sports gold medals of Great Britain.
