150 Years ago April 9: The Handshake to End it All

Thursday, April 9, 1865 marked the sesquicentennial of the end of the United States Civil War. It was also one of the early playings of Deal or No Deal. No models or briefcases included. Sorry Dick de Rijk and John de Mol.

One handshake between General Ulysses S. Grant and General Robert E. Lee cemented the four year battle between the Union and the Confederacy. It began a path of reconstruction in the southern United States.

All of which wasn't easy. Five days later, President Lincoln, while at Ford's Theatre in Washington, was spotted by a Confederate actor by the name of John Wilkes Booth, who decided to end Lincoln's life. And he did.

Grant would later be elected in 1868 and would serve two terms as President, at a time the south was under reconstruction.
