As you all know, Big Bank Hank of Sugar Hill Gang passed away earlier last week. Sugar Hill Gang brought the first rap song to airplay, "Rapper's Delight" in 1979.

Friday Jukebox 3.22.13

Bobby Smith, frontman of the band The (Detroit) Spinners, passed away a few days ago at age 76 due to cancer. The band has had its share of hits, including "Working My Way Back to You" from 1979.

Friday Jukebox 7.20.12: London is Calling!

These are possibly the first of the next four weeks that I'm devoting FJ to British music, in honor of the London games. With that in mind, London is calling this upcoming week, so what better than to play some Clash! The title track of their 1979 album London Calling.

Friday Jukebox 5.25.12: A Short Tribute to Robin Gibb.

Within the last few months, Robin Gibb was batting cancer. This past Sunday (5.20), he lost the battle at age 62. The Brothers Gibb has had their share of hits, including "Stayin' Alive," "Night Fever," and this one, "Tragedy," from 1979's Spirits Having Flown.

Wherever you are this weekend for this Memorial Day weekend here in the US, please enjoy the weekend and stay safely.

Friday Jukebox 10.28.11

A few weeks ago, the music world lost another great producer, Sylvia Robinson. Robinson, who worked at Sugar Hill Records, passed away. She helped produced such hits as "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash (1981) and the masterpiece, "Rapper's Delight" from the Sugar Hill Gang. From 1979, "Rapper's Delight" was the first hip-hop song to hit radio. And the rest is history. Better than today's shit.

Love the Buggles? I do. This is the song whose video was the first to receive airplay on MTV on Friday, August 1, 1981.

From the 1980 The Age of Plastic album, that also contains the awesome singles "I Love You (Miss Robot)" and "Clean Clean."

This week I've been scouring music choices as to what I want to choose for this week's FJ. And I came up on this great 1979 masterpiece from Italian Gino Soccio called "The Visitors." Italo Disco at it's finest, especially at this stage.
