Over 20 Years Ago, A Dark Weekend at Imola.

April 30, 1994. Practice for the San Marino Grand Prix. Roland Ratzenberger (above) lost control and hit a wall. He sustained injuries that was fatal for the Austrian driver. The next day (May 1) it was race day. Track conditions seemed to have no problem at all. But early on, Ayrton Senna (below) hits the wall. He was flown to a hospital where he was declared brain dead, and later fully dead. Two great racers that have given back to motorsport lost their lives on the same race weekend.

Truly, one of the darkest days in motorsport.

Television News Helicopter in Fiery Collision with Car; Two Dead

News helicopter from Seattle television station as you see above, goes down, and into a car, resulting in flames. Two died, one critically injured.

Haven't seen a fatality involving a television news helicopter since the tragedy in Phoenix in '07 when the helicopters of 3 and 15 collided.

Jason Leffler, 37: A Career in Perspective.

 

Jason Leffler in victory lane at the Kroger 200 NASCAR Busch Series race at O'Reilly Raceway Park Indianapolis, July 2007. His second and final NBS win. He was killed at a USAC National Sprint Series race in New Jersey Wednesday Night. He was 37.

Also won two Busch and one (Camping World) Truck Series win, and also raced at Indy. He also had 73 Cup starts, with the most recent being Pocono on Sunday, where he finished 43rd.

Car Crashes Behind Reporter!

See how this reporter at Tampa's WFLA television managed to not notice a car accident in the background during a report on gas prices!

Sad news...

Former Techsters and current OSU Cowgirl head coach Kurt Budke, and assistant killed in plane crash Friday morning, along with a former Oklahoma state senator who was the pilot. Everyone killed in the crash.

Budke was the former head coach for Lady Techsters basketball, and took over as head coach after Leon Barmore retired in late '90s. This was his seventh season as Cowgirl head coach.

Dan Wheldon 1978-2011

On Sunday, in the IndyCar finale at LVMS, Wheldon was among those involved in a scary multicar wreck that took out 15 of the 34 starters. The two time Indy 500 winner was transferred to a nearby hospital where he was later deceased. Wheldon leaves behind a wife and two children.

Two other injuries that were reported-Pippa Mann with a hand injury and Will Power with back pain.

IndyCar president Randy Bernard, formerly of the Professional Bull Riders (PBR), announced the death sometime while Saints-Bucs and Texans-Ravens were in the third quarter.

The wreck happened on lap 13 and it started by contact within two cars. Wheldon was five cars behind and he along with Power begin to go airborne. The fire that arose from the high groove erupted from (I believe) the back of Wheldon's. Wheldon did carry an onboard for the ESPN telecast in the race.  

After the news broke, the race was cancelled and five lap tribute were done by those remaining in the race in his honor. Wheldon was 33.

Wheldon's death was the fourth IndyCar death since the split of 1995. Scott Brayton was killed in Indy 500 practice in 1996. Tony Renna was killed in testing at IMS in 2003. Paul Dana was killed in practice at Homestead-Miami in 2006.

The world's greatest sports car race produced some very interesting points of the race...

Very big incidents. The four drivers involved have some sort of injuries. Horst Felbermayr Sr. suffered a concussion in his tangle-up with Jan Magnussen. Allan McNish is somewhat sore. Mike Rockenfeller has some injuries, but walked out of the car before being placed onto the stretcher. The worst of all injuries at this year's event-Michael Wainwright, who is reported to have broken ribs and a punctured lung in his crash.

Looking Back: Ten Years Ago Today.

A big, yet sad moment in the world of motorsport. As most of you know, this man, 7 time Winston Cup champion Ralph Dale Earnhardt Sr. (his 1980 championship ride pictured) was killed on the last lap of the Daytona 500, ten years ago today.

Dale would've been 59 (he would turn 60 in April) at the present time if living. This, like other motorsport deaths (Ayrton Senna, Greg Moore, Neil Bonnett to name a few) is just the nature of the motorsport industry goes. Since then, safety has improved in virtually all disciplines of motorsport worldwide.
