Copenhagen 2014 Reviews: TEO "Cheesecake"

Teo. Yes that is what his name is. What were you thinking? Manti Te'o? TEO is the Belarussian entry this year at Copenhagen with "Cheesecake."

"Cheesecake" is a bit lame, but I'm sure the only ones who will appreciate this song are the top 40 trash crowd. You know they'll vote this shit in for May 10 considering it is (1) for top 40 tastes and (2) tween girls will find him as 'cute' (see Ireland 2011 and 2012 as another example of why shitty songs go over powerful ones through an ESC semifinal). But sadly, that is the huge letdown of text voting across Europe on semifinal nights for way over a decade. I refuse to go into detail about this song, but please listen to it why I hate this song.

With that in mind, he will perform on Thursday 8 May in the second semifinal, and my bold prediction is that he won't make it to the grand final. Just based on song alone. Why has Belarus gone from solid stuff in the ESC the last few years, from Anastasia Vinnikova's "I Love Belarus" in 2011 (some find it corny, but I like it), to LITESOUND's "We Are the Heroes" (my second favorite song from Baku 2012), and last year with Alyona Lanskaya's "Solayoh" (despite the change from "Rhythm of Love", still like it, and is one of my favorites from Malmo) to this? Why? Just like Finland had solid entries within the last eight years, and then they send utter shit in 2013. Who actually like such shitty entries like this? C'mon man.

Hence the GEICO gecko's "Cheesesteak Shuffle" is much better than "Cheesecake." End of story.

Copenhagen 2014 Reviews: Dilara Kazimova "Start a Fire"

For the seventh consecutive year, Azerbaijan will participate in the ESC. For Copenhagen, Dilara Kazimova (pictured) won the national competition and will represent Azerbaijan with "Start a Fire."

"Start a Fire" is a beautiful ballad, in which is slow and sweet all the way, with some atmospheric vibes. Add the duduk and it is a perfect song. No stupid dubstep or top 40 shit involved here.

As far as the song goes, she performs on Tuesday 6 May in the first semifinal. I predict that this song will be among ten that will make the final this year. I really never liked a lot from Azerbaijan in ESC, with the exception of "When the Music Dies" by Sabina Babaeva at Baku 2012, where that song finished fourth in the grand final. Last year's effort at Malmo, "Hold Me" by Farid Mammadov had potential to gain my support, but was a huge letdown, despite finishing second in the final. I wish that Azerbaijan can send something edgier to ESC from now on, like some rock, rap or even an EDM-fused track (no dubstep elements please). I feel like since 2008 (first year of Azeri participation in the ESC), Azeri songs have been too soft. Go hard and euphoric! But this is just fine, and I'm okay with this.

Copenhagen 2014 Reviews: Tom Neuwirth as Conchita Wurst "Rise Like a Phoenix"

Yes folks, Austria will have a 'drag queen' representing their country at Copenhagen 2014. Meet Tom Neuwirth, an Austrian singer, who also performs under the name 'Conchita Wurst.'

It will not be the real Neuwirth, but instead his drag queen creation that will be on stage Thursday, the 8th of May in semifinal 2 with "Rise Like a Phoenix." "Rise Like a Phoenix" is a soft ballad, that starts off softly, and then it kicks it up a notch. However I find this very mediocre, and since semifinal 2 will be just as tough as semifinal 1 on Tuesday, the 6th of May, I really don't think this song will see grand final action on the 10th of May. That's my viewpoint.

I don't recall a lot of drag acts in the ESC, other than Sestre in 2002 with "Samo Ljubezen" (the group dressed as flight attendants in that performance), so this is nothing new. Even though there have been protests for this act from Russia and Belarus, there were also protests for Sestre prior to Tallinn 2002. I'm not joking, even though "Samo Ljubezen" is better than "Rise Like a Phoenix."

As far as the status of the song goes, I really don't think it sizes up to some of Austria's other superior entries of the past, such as Westend "Hurricane" (1983), the Rounder Girls "All to You" (2000) and Mess "Sonntag" (1982). Even Natalia Kelly "Shine" from Malmo 2013 was better. This was an internal selection by the Austrian ESC broadcaster, and it could hurt this country in the long run as far as future ESC participation. I thought Austria still did national finals?

NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Tournament 2014: Regional Semifinals & Finals Weekend

One of the biggest stories of the women's NCAA Division I basketball tournament so far is the courage by LSU, who lost a couple key players before the tourney, and then manage to pull off impressive wins against Georgia Tech, and then the comeback on Tuesday night on home court against West Virginia. Could the Lady Tigers' momentum continue? Louisville is their next opponent, as last year's national runners up could give them their best challenge of the tournament.

Also the two remaining unbeatens in all of Division I basketball can only be found in the regional semifinals, as Connecticut takes on BYU in the first Lincoln semifinal, while Notre Dame has Oklahoma State in the first semifinal at home. BYU became the first #12 to make it to a regional semifinal in a few years.

With that in mind...regional semifinals:

LINCOLN
(1) Connecticut v (12) BYU
(3) Texas A&M v (7) DePaul

PALO ALTO
(1) South Carolina v (4) North Carolina
(2) Stanford v (3) Penn State

SOUTH BEND
(1) Notre Dame v (5) Oklahoma State
(2) Baylor v (3) Kentucky

LOUISVILLE
(1) Tennessee v (4) Maryland
(3) Louisville v (7) LSU

LIVE across the ESPN networks Saturday through Tuesday. It is basketball folks.

Copenhagen 2014 Reviews: Aram MP3 "Not Alone"

Once again, for the second consecutive year, Armenia is back in the ESC. This year it will be 'Aram MP3' Sargsian (pictured) with "Not Alone."

"Not Alone" starts off good, and then the dubstep (which I really hate as an EDM fan) starts to kick in. It is a good song nonetheless, despite the fact it is soft and piano based, which is nothing wrong.

As far as where this song goes in Copenhagen, look no further than the first semifinal on May 6. This entry is a borderline entry, even though I pick this as one of ten (out of 16 in the first semifinal) to advance to the May 10 grand final. Besides "Lonely Planet" by Dorians (written by Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi) from Malmo 2013 (and made the grand final), I never liked a whole lot from this country, ESC-wise. Hope for the best.

The Road to Philadelphia 2014 Starts Friday!

Union College has had its best season ever, capping off its season with another ECAC tournament win and ending the season on top of the USCHO polls. Now they have the top seed in the Bridgeport, Connecticut region (#3 overall), and begin tournament play on Friday against Vermont, one of ten at larges in the field of 16.

Yale probably did not have a good season as they failed to make it in this year's tourney, a big disappointment for the defending national champions, however national runners-up Quinnipiac is in the tournament this year, as the Bobcats take on Providence College, which is also the other game in the Bridgeport region on Friday.

Minnesota is the #1 seed of the entire tournament, and the Gophers has that momentum from their win in the inaugural B1G hockey tourney at Xcel Center. Their first round opponent is Robert Morris. RMU defeated Canisius College in the Atlantic Hockey Association final on Saturday, and is the only AHA school in the tourney.

With that in mind, the matches for the first round:

ST. PAUL (both games Saturday)
(1) Minnesota v Robert Morris
St. Cloud State v Notre Dame

CINCINNATI (both games Friday)
(4) Wisconsin v North Dakota
Ferris State v Colgate

BRIDGEPORT, CT (both games Friday)
(3) Union College v Vermont
Providence College v Quinnipiac

WORCESTER, MA (both games Saturday)
(2) Boston College v U. of Denver
Massachusetts Lowell v Minnesota State Mankato

All the regional semifinals and finals are on the ESPN family of networks. Cawlidge hawkey!

Copenhagen 2014 Reviews: Hersi Matmuja "Zemerimi I Nje Nate"

Yes folks, it's spring time in the northern hemisphere. We all know what that means: EUROVISION time!

It is 40 days away from the first semifinal. This year, the 59th edition of the ESC is in Copenhagen. As the days are counted down, there will be my reviews of every entry one by one.

This year, 37 European nations will be present, down from 39 in Malmo 2013. Poland returns, and so does Portugal. Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia and Cyprus will try to regain financially for the 60th edition next year (ESC executive supervisor Jon Ola Sand (of Norway's NRK Television fame) said that he wants every nation involved in ESC for years to be there next year for that occasion, per an online interview somewhere online). Previous nations involved in the ESC--such as Slovakia, Czech Republic and Bosnia and Herzegovina--also declined to return this year.

With that in mind, it's time to begin the country by country review of the entries, starting with "Zemerimi I Nje Nate" by Herciana Matmuja (pictured).

Hersi is the first entry I am profiling, and the reason is simple: Albania is the first nation alphabetically among the ESC participating nations this year. This song starts off good with some good guitar riffs (on the original version, not in the 'edited for EUROVISION version'), then it gets somewhat soft in melody and rhythm. She has an OK voice, an almost mainstream pop voice. I would think that this could be a borderline final qualifier as she will perform out of the first semifinal on Tuesday, the 6th of May. As far as comparing this with past Albanian ESC entries, I don't think it was good as the Adrian Lulgjuraj & Bledar Sejko collaboration from last year ("Identitet," which really rocked and should've made the final!). I've never been really enthralled from anything from this country in ESC, but this is yet another head scratcher here.

NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Regional Semifinals & Finals This Weekend!

Top seeded Virginia in the New York region continues to be one of the Cinderella stories of this year's NCAA men's Division 1 basketball tournament, as regional semifinals begin this weekend.

Tennessee won it's play-in game with Iowa in Dayton and has since won their regional opening round and quarterfinal games. Now the Volunteers have a date with last year's national runners-up Michigan at the 'Drum' in the second Indianapolis region semifinal.

The best regional semifinal game is on Friday in the Indianapolis region as rivals collide--defending national champions Louisville, and Kentucky, who held on to send the top seed (and unbeaten) Wichita State team home on Sunday at Scottrade Center.

With all of this in mind, the regional semifinals:

NEW YORK (both Friday)
(1) Virginia v (4) Michigan State
(3) Iowa State v (7) Connecticut

MEMPHIS (both Thursday)
(1) Florida v (4) UCLA
(10) Stanford v (11) Dayton

INDIANAPOLIS (both Friday)
(4) Louisville v (8) Kentucky
(2) Michigan v (11) Tennessee

ANAHEIM (both Thursday)
(1) Arizona v (4) San Diego State
(2) Wisconsin v (6) Baylor
